If I may impose, I wonder if you could define the word "taarof" for me? I suppose it to mean something akin to "modest grudging empathy" as expressed by a people. I ran across the word recently in reading the National Geographic writeup on Persia. The article seemed to suggest that conquering armies would be accommodated by the ancient Persians with a sort of friendly but secretive attitude. Thus softening the occupation but allowing for quiet resistance.
