[...]one need only walk through the Muslim, Armenian, Assyrian and Jewish cemeteries of Iran and read the gravestones of the young men who died defending their country to grasp the degree of patriotism towards a homeland and a heritage that goes back thousands of years.

Unlike most countries in the middle east, Iran's borders are not lines in the sand drawn on the impulse of 19th- and 20th-century European colonialists. So-called American think-tanks can think themselves blue in the face, but Iran will not be balkanised.

hi Nunya,
I guess there is a reason for us finding so much sympathy in ourselves nowadays for German apologist films like The Downfall! I stopped watching them after that, it so JUSTIFIED and glorified our current rulers!
I think our curent rulers are megalomaniacs, who wouldn't know reality if it smacked them upside the head.
I just looked at the trailer for "Downfall." I'd never heard of it. It looks like a powerful film, but I lost my obsession/horror with the Nazis when I turned thirteen. I really never thought in a million years that my country would ever be run by somebody like Adolf Hitler.
George W. Bush is not sane. Frankly, I wish he would commmit suicide, and take all his crazy neocons with him.
I think we can thank the mainstream (US) press, the makers of electronic voting machines and the education system
The US isn't the only country that teaches nationalism in schools, though, I think most governments do that.
Nationalism is fine, to be thought aggression is not! And to create vague enemies in order to hide offensiveness under the mask of defense is not fine either.
I more pray for Cheney to have a heart attach! :)
I am sure many people do!
LOL, I've been praying for Cheney to have a heart attack, but people joke that the only thing that will kill him is an oaken stake through the heart, you know, like how you kill a vampire.

It took a minute to hunt down the post with Chicago Tribune article (10 things). I knew most of it, but I didn't know Oprah was popular in Iran, and I didn't know that female literacy was so low in Iraq.
My next door neighbors are orgiginally from Iran and they are quite lovely people. I still can't get used to the fact that she seems compelled to return the favor when I bring something over to eat (I knew not to bring pork, but I didn't know cheese wouldn't be a favorite). We don't do that here. When someone brings you a plate of cookies you accept them and say thank you and that's the end of it.
Funny that one of the ten things the Chi trib mentions is sattellite dishes because that's what my neighbors were doing today. I coudn't figure out why I was hearing a power drill because maintenance is off on Sundays.
Anyway, the whole military industrial complex and the way it's ruining my country can be watched here: Why We Fight
